The updated Conservation Authorities Act was one of the big topics at the most recent Oxford County Council meeting.
OXFORD COUNTY - Changes are coming to the conservation authorities in Oxford County.
Warden Larry Martin says the updated Conservation Authorities Act will determine which conservation services are mandatory and how each service should be paid for.
"It's to help create more transparency and openness through the conservation authorities by the provincial government. It's going to be somewhat similar but will also involve more outside user pay fees as opposed to everything being collected through the levy."
All services will be divided into three categories; required services funded by the levy, services requested by the municipalities (with a signed Memorandum of Understanding to determine funding), and services the conservation authorities would like to offer that would be funded through revenues (ex: campgrounds).
All of the changes must be in place by 2024. Martin says county officials would like to meet with the conservation authorities and the area municipalities to get the ball rolling.
"What the Planning Department is proposing is that they meet with the conservation authorities as well as the area municipalities because we are the ones that get billed eventually and go through the county, to come up with agreements with the conservation authorities as far as what services we would like, what we need and we would go forward from there."
We have four conservation authorities in Oxford County; the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority, the Long Point Region Conservation Authority, the Grand River Conservation Authority, and the Catfish Creek Conservation Authority.
