OPP asking drivers to use caution in construction zones
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford OPP is looking to avoid a construction tragedy on our roadways.
Earlier this week, a worker was struck and killed in St Thomas as he was directing traffic at a construction site.
Constable Stacey Culbert says these kinds of fatalities can be avoided.
"We would like [drivers] to exercise caution, slow down, be aware of the vehicles that are ahead of you as well so they could be making sudden stops, obeying all of the sign barriers that are in construction zones who are there for a purpose-- to keep themselves safe and to keep the motoring public safe as well as continue to direct the flow of traffic."
Culbert says road crews are vulnerable as vehicles are driving past them while they work.
"Avoid watching what is being done on the road. Just concentrate on your driving. We want to make sure that people are getting to their destination. We have to be patient. You will get there but if you have a crash, you may not get there at all."
She stresses the importance of driving slow when instructed to as road equipment is very large with many blind spots.
"Make a nice, wide berth wherever they are directed to keep you driving, make sure you do that. Certainly we don't want to see any motoring public that's out there in those zones ending up in one of those zones ending up in one of those spots that can be very dangerous."
Drivers who do not slow down in construction zones can be fined $95 in addition to other, Criminal Charges which may apply.
