Some local faces were in the crowd when Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre announced the Jail Not Bail Act in Vaughn.
VAUGHN - Oxford MP Arpan Khanna joined Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre in Vaughn to announce plans for the Jail Not Bail Act.
The Conservatives will introduce it in the House of Commons once Parliament resumes next week.
If it's passed, it would strengthen bail laws to prevent anyone convicted of a major offence in the last 10 years from getting bail. Major offences would include firearm, sexual, kidnapping, human trafficking, home invasion, robbery, extortion, arson, and assault charges.
The Jail Not Bail Act would prohibit anyone with an indictable conviction from serving as a guarantor and ensure that someone else's bail conditions are followed accordingly. It would also enforce bail conditions on guarantors and require non-residents to surrender their passports upon request.
Lastly, the act would also repeal and replace the Principle of Restraint, so the primary consideration would be the protection and safety of the public.
Woodstock Mayor Jerry Acchione was also in attendance for the announcement yesterday alongside Woodstock Police Chief Rod Wilkinson and Deputy Chief Nick Novacich.
In addition to serving as the Member of Parliament for Oxford County, Arpan Khanna also serves as the National Outreach Chair for the Conservative Party.
