Two local Conservation Authorities have issued possible flooding statements, with rainfall and melting snow causing potential water increases for ditches, streams, rivers, and more.
UPDATE: The Long Point Region Conservation Authority has issued a flood watch.
---
OXFORD COUNTY - Both the Long Point Region and Grand River Conservation Authorities have issued possible flooding statements for their local watersheds.
They say this is due to runoff generated by potential snow melting due to increased temperatures as well as the rainfall seen in the area.
At this point in time no major flooding is expected to occur; however, some watercourses may reach or exceed their banks creating localized flooding in floodplains, low-lying areas, and regions with poor drainage.
The public is encouraged to exercise extreme caution around all local waterways. Banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are very slippery and, when combined with cold, fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard.
Any ice-covered bodies of water are considered unsafe. Parents are encouraged to keep their children and pets away from all watercourses.
River conditions and forecasts are being monitored closely.
Water levels are expected to remain high into the weekend, with the current statements remaining in effect until 12 p.m. on Monday, January 29, 2024.
