She's no longer Finance Minister, but will continue as Liberal MP.
OTTAWA - Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will have to appoint a new Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister.
Chrystia Freeland announced her resignation this morning, adding that's leaving cabinet immediately. She will continue to serve as the Liberal MP for the Toronto riding of University—Rosedale.
She shared a letter to the Prime Minister on her social media pages this morning, revealing that Trudeau informed her on Friday that he didn't want her to serve as the Finance Minister anymore.
She said choosing the resign from cabinet was the only honest and viable path to take.
"To be effective, a Minister must speak on behalf of the Prime Minister and with his full confidence. In making your decision, you made clear that I no longer credibly enjoy that confidence and possess the authority that comes with it."
She has been at odds with the Prime Minister over the best path forward for Canada over the past few weeks, calling the threat of 25 percent tariffs from the incoming United States administration a grave challenge.
The Trudeau Government is set to release the fall economic statement today. It's expected to show a larger-than-promised deficit, how Ottawa plans to tackle the threatened tariffs from the U.S., and measures to incentivize business investment in Canada.
