Approximately 55 families in Norwich Township helped by Christmas Hamper Campaign.
NORWICH - While Halloween just wrapped up, the Salvation Army is already taking applications for their Christmas Hamper program.
The hampers go out to families in need over the holidays and provide food for a special holiday meal.
Norwich Store Manager Gwen Smart says on top of the hampers, her store also has an Angel Tree for those families with children.
"What these angels consist of are the child's age, whether it a female or a male, the clothing size, the shoe size and a few of the children's wishes. Then that is put on our angel tree and people come in an take it off and they go buy for the child." Smart says the goods are then returned to the store unwrapped and added to the family's hamper.
Smart says there are several pieces of information they need from those applying for the hampers.
"Income verification for each person on the application including your Child Tax Credit, some kind of i.d., we ask for a rent receipt or a copy of a lease or mortgage and then any other bills like Hydro, heat, telephone, stuff like that."
In Norwich, 55 families were helped last year, which is down from 62 the year before.
"If it wasn't for the community in Norwich -- even in Norwich -- we do Norwich, Otterville, Burgessville, Springford, you know all the little communities around out of the Norwich Office. We would have a heck of a time. We are very lucky we have the Optimist, the Lions and the Legion, that helps us there. For a small community that's a fair bit of people."
Hamper applications are being accepted by appointment only from now until the end of November.
Smart says in Norwich, the hampers will be distributed December 23.
