Woodstock will be among the areas that will be a part of one of four routes added to both The Town of Tillsonburg and Middlesex County.
WOODSTOCK - City council was informed on upcoming changes involving public transit in the region and in Middlesex County.
The County and Town of Tillsonburg both received approval for funding through the Community Grant Transit Program last year for the creation of inter-municipal public transit routes, using the funding to create inter-municipal public transit routes.
Staff's report says both Middlesex and Tillsonburg will be adding four routes, one of which will loop through Mount Elgin, Ingersoll, Woodstock, Burgessville and Norwich before coming back to Tillsonburg. In Woodstock, the route will stop at the Woodstock Transit Terminal, Woodstock Hospital and the VIA Rail station.
The fixed route in Woodstock will run five times during the day, expected to stop at the Transit Terminal at 7:15 am, 10:10 am, 12:45 pm, 3:45 pm and 6:15 pm. The routes will operate for one year and service will begin on April 1st, 2020.
Communities across the province will get a total of $30 million over five years to develop their own micro-transit initiative.
Meanwhile, the provincial government is also looking to extend Go Transit in Oxford County, along with further use of VIA Rail.
City staff has been working with staff from Middlesex and Tillsonburg for the last few months to create these public transit routes.
The report also says City staff is working on developing agreements regarding the use of facilities so they're covered for insurance and liability issues. Staff is also reviewing the proposed schedules so they don't affect the new routes.
