Change of Direction for WKNR

A tough choice to change directions has been made for the Woodstock Kitten Nursery and Rescue.

WOODSTOCK - It is a time of change for the Woodstock Kitten Nursery and Rescue (WKNR).

The organization will continue to adopt out kittens and cats, but will no longer be able to rescue and take in new animals. President and Founder Catherine Black says it was a tough decision to make, but one that made sense.

"It's been about a year coming. We just find we're not getting enough support from the community or the local government or any government to continue to fund this rescue, basically."

Black says costs are increasing from food to vetting, and people don't have as much to spend, so donations are declining. Black outlines the plan going forward.

"We've done some work over the last year to where we've gone out and done some workshops and visit with the Brightside Hub at the Wellkin Center. We go there once in a while."

Black adds that they also want to get involved with helping seniors, as there are many lonely seniors who could benefit from a visit with a cat. She mentions that with the programs going forward involving people, there is the hope that more funding could become available.

The rescue is also planning to expand its Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate and Return program for feral and free roaming cats, with a focus on rural properties.
