Changes have been made to the Cenotaph in Tillsonburg
TILLSONBURG - The Cenotaph in Tillsonburg now has the word 'Afghanistan' inscribed on it.
The official inscription was veiled at a special ceremony Tuesday.
Tillsonburg Military History Club member Frank Moore says this is just another aspect of wars being fought by Canadians and should be given as much attention as Remembrance Day.
"I think it's one of the things that we as citizens need to recognize -- the contributions of our military. While I don't have a military background, I think it's important to convey the messages out and recognize people who have actually given their lives and served their country in the interest of our freedom."
"I think it's really important to engage our military, bring them into our communities and have our communities actually recognize the efforts that have been put forward by these folks and I think it does good for the community to understand what is happening globally and that brings it right home to the small towns that we live in."
At the dedication ceremony Tuesday, Sergeant Stephen Thomas was the keynote speaker. He was awarded the Medal of Bravery in 2006.
Moore says Tillsonburg is one of the first cenotaph's to have the word Afghanistan added next to World War 1, World War 2 and Korea.
