Oxford County shared some of their success stories and accessibility milestones today.
The event was hosted by the accessibility advisory committee and featured presentations on how the County has become more accessible in recent years and some of the work that still needs to be done. Executive Outreach Director for the Accessibility Directorate of Ontario Alfred Spencer says he thinks everyone should look beyond the Ontario Accessibility Act.
"I think all of us need to look at our friends, our neighbours, our families and see the needs that they might have so that they can fully participate in society, for example how does someone with mobility needs get into a restaurant, how does that person get to use a washroom in a public facility."
Spencer says one of the key messages they wanted to get across was how people with disabilities can influence both council and businesses to meet the needs of all communities so you can experience social inclusion.
Accessible Housing Supervisor with Oxford County Tammy Macdonald talks about some of the success stories they have had at some of the County owned buildings.
"Since 2013 we have added 6 modified units within in our portfolio, I'm very excited about a year ago we actually converted one of our common lounges in on our buildings into a modified two bedroom and it is now a home for a mom and her 10 year old son."
