Students at College Ave. Secondary joined in the chorus from high school students across the region today. Several student walkouts were staged by high schoolers, upset about losing their extra curricular activities to the ongoing labour dispute. Teachers have pulled out of supervising clubs and coaching sports teams, because of they're disapproval of Bill 115, which takes away their collective bargaining rights, among other things. About 35 students at CASS walked out of 1st period classes this morning, including Grade 10 student, Jimmy. "I was in the Anime Club, and it was during the lunch hour on Fridays. On Friday we basically talked about how we're not going to be doing it anymore and the reasons that we weren't going to be doing it. I was upset because a lot of them are my friends that I don't see anywhere else, they're not in my classes and I don't see them anywhere else in the school. We were just sitting in a classroom and hanging out with people with the same interests as us. Apparently we can't do that anymore even though it doesn't cost anything to do it. It's just the teachers giving up their lunch hour so we can hang out and have fun." Joining the protest were some students from the UN Club, who are upset they could miss out on a trip that is being planned for May to go to New York City. Grade 9 student Alex tells Heart FM, "They were so excited for the New York trip, and everything going on in the UN Club. We recently talked to people from Taiwan and Guelph through Poly-Com. And everybody is just upset that we can't do that anymore." If the teachers job action isn't solved soon, the New York trip could be one of the many casualties of the labour dispute.
