It's a small step in a very long road to stopping the proposed Beachville dump. That's according to Oxford People Against the Landfill after an application to close the road west of the quarry was denied last night. Carmeuse Lime came to Zorra Township's Council meeting saying they wanted it closed off to the public since it's no longer big enough for their large trucks. But Zorra's Mayor Margaret Lupton said the closure would have affected the landowner across the road. "We don't very often close a road if it's going to cause hardship for somebody; usually what we're doing is trying to help someone out. So they denied the application". The farmland is owned by Pat Maloney and has been in the family since 1945. He's relieved this has been settled. "It would have been disastrous for us and our farming operation and the convenience and everything. It would have devaluated our farm drastically". The decision also left a small celebration amongst the public in attendance. OPAL Alliance member Don Clark says he has a whole new look on the township's council now. "I know that there has been among many people less than stellar faith in the mayor and the councillor of Zorra. In my opinion, it has been elevated considerably". The side road now permanently prevents Carmeuse from expanding west.
