Canadian Blood Services is inviting you to try something new this year - give blood!
Canadian Blood Services is putting forth a plea for donors as the banks begin to dwindle.
Michael Betel, Director of Donor Relations South Central Ontario, says they are struggling to make sure they have enough blood for those that need it. "Well O- which can go to all recipients and patients in the hospital is right now very low; we're at two to three days and we should have five to eight days supply of each of the blood types."
One car crash victim could need 50 donors, and cancer patients need ongoing support from Canadian Blood Services.
Betel says they are hoping people will continue with the spirit of holiday giving in the new year and give the gift of life. "We do everything we can to get people in before the holidays when they are in the giving mood which is great and people did really come forward to help us out which was great. But for some reason that particular type which is one of our more demanding - that O- is actually the lowest of all the blood types right now."
Betel also encourages all people who have never given blood before to try it this year - he says knowing that you have saved a life will give you a feeling of euphoria. "It seems that because people are travelling and involved with family stuff over the holidays that this is consistently a challenging time of year for us. We have a free Give Blood App they can download or go to Blood.ca - they can book an appointment on their own, choose the day, locations, and time themselves and make an appointment to come see us."
The next clinic in Oxford County is on Thursday January 7th at Goff Hall.
