Unifor Local 88 will be in a legal strike position at 10:59 pm on September 17, 2017.
INGERSOLL - The workers at the GM CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll are prepared to strike if they do not get what they are asking for at the bargaining table.
Workers voted 99.8 percent in favour of a strike action on Sunday.
Unifor Local 88 GM Unit Chairperson Mike Van Boekel says talks between Unifor Local 88 and General Motors officially started on Monday.
"The membership of Unifor Local 88 have demonstrated that they are in full support of their Bargaining Committee, and our direction in this set of negotiations. The Bargaining Committee will not accept a deal without a commitment to address shop floor issues, improved wages & benefits and a new investment at our facility."
He adds the employees deserve to be compensated for the work they have done over the past 8 years.
"The membership needs to be rewarded for meeting all of the quality and productivity targets, along with working 24 hours a day, 6 days a week for the past 8 years. GM CAMI Assembly Ingersoll makes over $2.0 billion per year."
Unifor Local 88 President Dan Borthwick says that having nearly 100 percent of workers supporting a strike action sends a strong message to GM.
"The membership took an important step today to support the Bargaining Committee; this mandate provides a crucial tool for successful bargaining. The vote today sends a clear message to GM that the members stand behind the Bargaining Committee and the proposals that Unifor Local 88 put forward on behalf of the membership."
Unifor Local 88 will be in a legal strike position at 10:59 pm on September 17, 2017.
