Birtch Farms Pumpkin Butter Recall

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Birtch Farms and Estate Winery have issued a recall for the local retailer's Pumpkin Butter. It was sold in 110 ml and 250 ml jars. The Pumpkin Butter was voluntarily recalled by Birtch Farms as it may be contaminated with clostridium botulinum, which could cause the life-threatening illness botulism. The CFIA are monitoring the effectiveness of the recall. Birtch Farms and Estate Winery are located in Woodstock and say the product has been distributed in Ontario only. According to the CFIA, food contaminated with Clostridium botulinum toxin may not look or smell spoiled. If consumed, the toxin could cause nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, headache, double vision, dry throat, respiratory failure and paralysis. In severe cases of illness, people may die.
