Lots of teens will be heading to the beaches in Norfolk County today.
NORFOLK - It's Beach Day in Norfolk County.
Andrew Gamble, the Community Engagement Officer for the Norfolk OPP, says it's an unofficial tradition where high school students will skip school on the first Friday in June so they can spend the day at Turkey Point, Long Point or Port Dover.
"Years ago the students who did attend were primarily coming from Norfolk County schools, but in recent years it really has taken on a life of its own. We're seeing students from schools not only in surrounding communities, but schools in bigger city centres as well."
This includes students from the counties of Oxford, Haldimand, Brant, and the cities of Brantford and Hamilton.
Gamble stresses that students should technically be in the classroom today, but he wants them to be safe regardless of where they are.
"It is a school day, so the expectation is that students should be in school. However, we know that many of them will not be and with that there is tremendous responsibility to represent themselves in an appropriate way, but to make good decisions."
There will be an increased police presence on the beaches and the surrounding area today. Officers will be on the lookout for underage drinking, impaired driving, trespassing, property damage and other unlawful behaviour.

Before you hit the sand, remember: good decisions = positive outcomes.
Others can suggest what safe, respectful behaviour looks like - but the choices you make are yours alone. Choose wisely. (1 of 2) ^ag pic.twitter.com/8QrDvCRKRs
Students are heading to beaches today across West Region and so are the #OPP. Officers will be focusing on those that fail to put safety as a priority and put others at risk! #WROPP ^es pic.twitter.com/eAj7Z9msLq
