While people enjoy the holiday weekend, Norfolk County OPP are advising everyone to be safe and responsible. They are expecting traffic, to and from popular vacation spots, to increase this long weekend as the summer holiday season begins.
NORFOLK COUNTY - The Norfolk County OPP is reminding everyone of the importance of celebrating responsibly this holiday weekend.
With provincial highways and roads about to see some of the highest traffic volumes of the year, officers will be targeting aggressive drivers over the Canada Day Long Weekend.
The OPP responded to 64 speed-related collisions during last year's long weekend, three of which resulted in the loss of life. Officers laid 7,393 speeding charges over the four-day weekend.
They will be patrolling major highways and secondary roadways carefully this weekend promoting safe driving. Police will continue to target aggressive drivers who speed, drive under the influence of drugs/alcohol, drive distracted or fail to wear their seat belts.
They are expecting traffic, to and from popular vacation spots, to increase this long weekend as the summer holiday season begins. Drivers are encouraged to plan stops along the way to make the trip more enjoyable and to avoid getting tired.
The OPP will also be careful on area waterways ensuring boating enthusiasts are wearing life jackets or personal floatation devices. They will also be checking to ensure operators are qualified and have all the required safety gear on board their vessels.
Police also caution swimmers to ensure they do not enter into water that exceeds their swimming ability and to utilize areas where lifeguards are present.
