The Thames Valley District School Board will be handing out the 37th annual Lawson Literary Awards to students in grades 7 and 8 tonight.
24 students from across the district including Oxford will be getting an award for the research papers they did on a Canadian topic of interest. Executive Director of the Thames Valley Education Foundation Rena Princess tells Heart FM the papers were done on a wide variety of topics. Several of the written submissions celebrate the contributions of Canadian women, while others address mental and physical health issues. Other student essays share the history of national symbols, such as the Canadian flag and the maple tree, and one entry is written as a letter from the future about the impact of the Keystone XL pipeline. Some of the submissions are accounts of personal experiences, which are supplemented with factual information. For example, Nader from Ashley Oaks Public School wrote about his young friend who is trying to recover from, and live a full life, following treatments for leukemia.
The Lawson Literary Awards have been around since 1978 and are sponsored by the family of the late Colonel Tom Lawson. Each student who wins will get an award plaque, $100 and their story will be published in a bound copy of all Lawson Award winning entries. The award ceremony is happening tonight for the students and their families at the Education Centre in London
