Armour Clad Men Make Festival Pitch to Council

The first ever Oxford Renaissance Festival has potential to be a tourism draw for Woodstock. That was the assessment of city councillor Paul Plant, after hearing a presentation about the festival. It's being held at the Woodstock Fairgrounds on the weekend of June 14th-16th. It will feature jousting, fire eating, magic shows and medieval comedy, among other things. With a budget of $60,000 for the event, the organizers were questioned by councillors about insurance coverage, and how much they're spending on advertising it. Councillor Plant, who sits on the Community Grants Committee, suggested the organizers apply for a grant to help them with marketing the event. "We make recommendations to council, we don't approve it. So we can make a recommendation that they're under there under a one-time thing, if the majority of the committee feels it should be recommended." But organizer Greg Schuurman says he will follow up on it. "It's going regardless. If the city helps even better, but if not, that's ok, we're going ahead with it anyways." The organizers will also be seeking a liquor license from the city for a pub night for the event, but stress it's going to be a family event on the weekend of June 14th-16th.
