Power outages possible this weekend with freezing rain in the forecast
With a pending ice storm on our doorstep this weekend, local emergency officials say it's a great opportunity to plan for a power outage.
That includes having supplies together for a 72-hour emergency preparedness kit.
Dianne Marshall with Emergency Management Oxford County is encouraging all families to come up with a plan for a power outage. "We're fortunate because we have 24-hours to plan ahead, which is what we want people to do. Think about having emergency kits available. So today, take the time to talk to your family and come up with a plan about what you're going to do if the power does go out this weekend."
Essentials include working flashlights, blankets and enough food and water for 72-hours.
If the power does go out, you're also advised not to open your fridge or freezer to preserve the food inside. An unopened fridge without power will keep food cold for 4-6 hours, which can be extended if you place bags of ice in your fridge. A full freezer will keep frozen for about 2-days unopened, and a half freezer about a half day, according to Marshall.
Also if the power goes out for an extended period, residents are asked to check on their elderly or more vulnerable neighbours.
