Artists have until September 6th to submit an expression of interest for the Florence Carlyle Sculpture Commission.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock is still accepting applications for a sculpture commission at Florence Carlyle Park.
The $75,000 project will commemorate historic artist Florence Carlyle, who the park is named after. The Department of Canadian Heritage Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage is donating $50,000 towards the commission, coming from their Legacy Fund. The remaining $25,000 will be covered by the City of Woodstock’s art acquisition reserve fund.
Mary Reid, Director/Curator of the Woodstock Art Gallery, explained why Florence is important to our community.
"Florence Carlyle was a trailblazing female artist who garnered national and international acclaim while practicing at the same level and calibre as her male contemporaries. The intent of this public artwork is to recognize her importance not only to Woodstock but to the development of Canadian art."
The project will also aim to improve the representation of diversity in Woodstock and promote the inclusion of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. It is believed that Carlyle was a member of the community alongside her lifelong female companion Juliet Hastings.
Submissions of ideas are not requested at this time but artists can submit an expression of interest and qualifications until September 6th, 2023. The application package can be found online here.
