The Ontario Environmental Review Tribunal says it does not have jurisdiction in the West Quarry Lake issue.
The Ontario Environmental Review Tribunal has rejected two separate appeals from Oxford County and the Oxford People Against the Landfill (OPAL Alliance).
Both groups were trying to stop Carmeuse Lime Limited from dumping industrial sewage into the West Quarry Lake. The Tribunal ruled on the matter this week saying they have no jurisdiction in the matter. Chair of OPAL Brian Smith tells Heart FM they are obviously disappointed with the ruling.
"We are disappointed, obviously, in this decision because we believe the Quarry Lake is a viable habitat and is a ecological system that needs to be protected and because it is part of a water system that people drink from and that becomes the headwaters of the Thames River."
Smith says they are not giving up hope and OPAL will continue to move forward with other avenues to try and save the West Quarry Lake and are trying to get in touch with the Minister of Environment Glen Murray.
"We want to bring to his attention that despite the fact that some senior advisors in his department said they would not make any decisions about any part of the landscape, or should we say the water scape right - separate from a consideration of all things and in fact they have done that now contradictory to what his senior advisors had said. So we want to make him aware of that contradiction. We also want to make sure that our original request that the dump be stopped so it would not damage wells, drinking water, the Quarry Lake or the Thames River, so we are going to push that decision be made on that and that in turn would trump the decision already made."
