The Perth District Health Unit is investigating after a black and brown German Shepherd-type dog bit someone in Listowel.
LISTOWEL - The Perth District Health Unit is investigating another dog biting incident.
They believe a black and brown German Shepherd-type dog bit someone on the corner of Elma Street East and Wellington Avenue South in Listowel Saturday morning.
This is the third time this month that the Perth District Health Unit has had to reach out to the public regarding a dog biting incident. A Bullmastiff-type dog allegedly bit someone in Wildwood Conservation Area on Sunday August 5th and a medium sized white dog with short hair reportedly bit someone in St. Marys on Saturday August 11th.
Senior Public Health Inspector Dale Lyttle says this is nothing out of the ordinary.
"These types of things happen throughout the summer and winter. It's just a coincidence that we've had three back to back news stories in the last three weeks."
Lyttle says they would like to avoid rabies treatment for the latest victim.
"The easiest way to do that is to talk to the owner of the animal and to have the dog confined at their residence for 10 days to rule out transmission."
If the dog survives the 10 days, officials can rule out rabies.
Rabies is a neurological disease that can completely change your pet's personality. It comes in two forms; furious rabies or dumb rabies.
The symptoms are as follows;
Furious Rabies - Attacking random objects, foaming at the mouth, showing teeth, biting and self mutilation.
Dumb Rabies - Extremely docile and lazy.
If the dog has rabies the dog bite victim will have to receive a serious of shots.
It is the law in Ontario that all dogs, cats and ferrets over three months old must be vaccinated for rabies.
