The Ward 1 council seat is now empty, and Norwich Township Council will decide how to fill it today.
NORWICH TOWNSHIP - There will be an empty seat at today's Norwich Township Council meeting.
John Scholten officially retired as the Ward 1 Councillor at the end of 2023. But this wasn't a shock, because he submitted his resignation letter in August. He served on council for eight and a half years and decided to step back due to "personal and family reasons."
Now that his seat is vacant, the other members of Township Council have to decide how to find his replacement.
There are two options on the table; council could ask staff to create a bylaw that would trigger a by-election or council could appoint someone to the position. Staff will recommend that a by-election be held during today's meeting.
A by-election was held in the Township last year after Alisha Stubbs resigned as the Ward 2 Councillor. Lynne DePlancke is now representing the village of Norwich in Council Chambers.
Ward 1 covers the southern end of the Township including the villages of Otterville and Springford.
Today's meeting will begin at 9:00 a.m. and you can watch the livestream online here.
