Friends of Canadian Broadcasting would like everyone to boycott Facebook and Instagram today and tomorrow, as a show of support for Canadian news outlets and broadcasters.
CANADA - Lots of people will be boycotting Facebook and Instagram as a show of support for Canadian news outlets and broadcasters.
The Online News Act, also known as Bill C-18, will require Meta and Google to pay news outlets for the content they link to or repurpose on their sites. In response to this, Meta has decided to block all Canadian news content from Facebook and Instagram. Heart FM is one of the many news outlets affected.
An advocacy group called Friends of Canadian Broadcasting is now calling on everyone to boycott Facebook and Instagram on Wednesday August 24th and Thursday August 25th in order to support those affected.
The Online News Act will take effect at the end of the year, and Google has also announced plans to block Canadian news from its search engine once it happens.
