A special event is focusing on the heath and well being of caregivers in Oxford County.
WOODSTOCK - A spotlight will be shone on the difficulties caregivers face during a special event in Woodstock tonight.
The Alzheimer's Society of Oxford is putting on a free event called Addressing Caregiver Fatigue with Self Compassion and it aims at ensuring caregivers remember to address their own needs and their own health concerns.
Executive Director with the Alzheimer's Society of Oxford Shelley Green says this is for caregivers of all sorts, not just those helping someone with cognitive impairment.
"Whether they're caring for someone with Alzheimer's or dementia, or whether they're caring for someone who has other physical or mental health needs, that oftentimes family members will go to the Nth degree to care for that person, and oftentimes putting their own needs and their own health aside."
Green says it's important for caregivers to take stock of their own needs as well as the person they care for.
"It's a challenging journey for sure, for the person with the diagnosis and the caregiver and their family members and friends that are involved in the care of the person with the diagnosis. It's really important we as a community recognize the challenges and the strain on the individual providing the care at home."
The event tonight features guest speaker Patricia Baigent who has a Masters in Social Work and has worked in healthcare and social services for 25 years.
The event is free and is taking place over at the Children's Aid Society in Woodstock from 6:30 until 8:30 on June 15th, 2016.
They encourage you to register beforehand by calling 519-421-2466, or email dana@alzheimer.oxford.on.ca
