Oxford County is getting plenty of praise from Provincial leaders for their 2050 initiative.
Municipal leaders from the County returned home from the three day conference in Toronto on Friday. Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch says several people approached them about the goal to make Oxford rely 100 percent on renewable energy by the year 2050. He tells Heart FM the province wants to use the County as an example for others to follow and look at what were doing as sort of a pilot project.
"The Minister of Economic Development Brad Duguid, he sees a great opportunity for Woodstock to become a showcase, because of our location at the crossroads of the 401 and the 403, he sees the potential for renewable energy industries to be located in our area."
Birtch says Oxford was praised for the work being done with sustainability initiatives including the renewable energy plan and it was noted we are one the only ones following the stringent guidelines to become less reliant. However Warden David Mayberry admits he was expecting more acknowledgement for the work being done in Oxford and says we are still not considered a leader when it comes to green energy.
"I don't think so yet, and I think part of is because we haven't really talked about this beyond Oxford County, I think that as we go forward, it will be how to engage more broadly. I think there are still a lot of people who are concerned if this is possible and when you start explaining all the things that are happening in Oxford, most people are quite surprised. We still have a bit of work to do on getting the word out, we have done an excellent job of reaching out to various Universities and industry insiders know what we are doing, so I think we have done sort of the quiet thing very well but I think we still have some work to do to advertise it so that the wider community is aware of the renewable energy 2050 plan."
