Oxford Attack U-13 Team wins in London, U-14 hosts friendly tournament
The Oxford Attack U13 Bantam boys basketball team had another test of competition this past weekend at a tournament in London. With 3 games on Saturday, and 1 game on Sunday, the Attack met teams of equal calibre, and every match could have been won by either team.
First up was a game against the host London Gold Medal ‘A’ team. The game was evenly played and tied late in the fourth quarter; however the Attack eventually fell 32-30. Ethan Roberts led Attack scorers with 12 points, including 3 – 3 point shots.
Next was a match against a formidable opponent in the Brantford Rep Hawks #2, and again the game was close fought to the end, with Brantford edging out Oxford 38-34. Oxford shared the ball well and balanced scoring from multiple players resulted.
The third game of the day saw the Attack taking on the Guelph CYO Knights club. The Attack was challenged by a ‘zone’ style defence, and the team could not find ways to score and got behind early. With some strategic ‘time-outs’ and some adjustments to the offence, the Attack clawed their way back into the game. The end result was a Guelph victory by one point, 25-24, however some valuable experience was gained. Centre Justin Chisolm had a breakout game for the Attack, leading scorers with 14 points and many rebounds, often in the face of double-team defensive pressure.
In the last game of the tournament, the Attack faced another London club team in the London Ramblers. Oxford got off to a quick start and built an early lead. However, with a few Attack players in early foul trouble, and London’s scrappy style of play, the margin narrowed. As in the previous game, the Oxford guards found Justin Chisolm and he converted many opportunities into points on the board, eventually leading Oxford to a 31-26 victory. Evan Roswell and Tyler Rooke were also key contributors to the Attack win.
Next up is a few weeks of practice before a tournament in Brantford on January 24-26.
-----------------------------------------
The Oxford Attack Under 14 Major Bantam Boys competitive basketball team won two of three games in their home friendly tournament to start the off the New Year. The Attack boys played with more aggressiveness and overall improved play over their recent slump of close game losses.
The Attack opened the tourney against the St. Thomas Shock who defeated the Attack in overtime a few weeks earlier. The Attack started extremely slowly reverting back to old habits and fell behind by almost 20 points in the first half. Team turnovers and a lack of aggressiveness of offense and defense hurt their team. The Attack rebounded in the second half to narrow the gap to eventually lose 39 – 38. Brandon Cowan continues to play well against the Shock netting 20 points. Zackary Dykeman was perfect from the free throw line. Liam Dempsey contributed 4 steals and leads his team in hustle almost every game.
The Attack next faced the Guelph Phoenix who played a unique 1-3-1 half court zone that took the Attack one half to figure out before controlling the game en route to a 49 – 30 victory. Ten out of eleven players scored for the Attack with Lucas Gagnon, Ibrahim Taha and Adam Bullen netting 10, 4 and 3 points, respectively. Quinten Quackenbush-Schneider is improving in his new role as a guard facilitator for the Attack offense and press break.
The Attack next faced the Chatham-Kent Wildcats and won the battle of tired teams playing their 3rd game in the day without much practice after the holidays with a 45 – 28 victory. Cubby Dempster and Ben Jentz played their best games for the Attack this season with solid guard play. Matthew Keith is becoming an excellent defensive rebounder corralling 5 rebounds. Cowan and Callaghan Bullen led their team in scoring with 17 and 8 points, respectively.
Next up for the Attack U14 boys is a mini tourney in Orangeville later in January.
