4th Annual Realtors Care Food Drive being hailed a success

The 4th Annual Realtors Care Food Drive is being hailed a success with 17 thousand pounds of food collected for the Salvation Army Food Bank.

Nearly 200 volunteers took part Wednesday evening collecting bags of food left on the front steps of homes in Woodstock and Ingersoll. 

Director Community and Family Services at The Salvation Army Vanessa Giuliano says the Woodstock drive alone brought in over 13 thousand pounds of food. 

"I mean it might not sound like a lot by saying two months worth of food, but when you're seeing 10-20 families a day, that's a lot of families that that 13,000 pounds of food have helped so it's just wonderful."

Giuliano says Wednesday evening's event was the most successful to date in Woodstock. 

"I mean usually when we do the (Christmas) parade we get about 5 maybe 6 of these great big, you know, 4 foot by 4 foot boxes full of food, well we got 13 of those last night."

Giuliano says it would have taken more than six months to collect what they brought in during Wednesday night's event. 

"I think this has been a bumper crop this year actually. I do think, I'm not sure I've seen one this big, now I could be speaking out of turn. This was big, it was extremely well organized. We had a great team this end that were accepting the donations that came in. It was very streamline, very smooth."

Giuliano says while the donations help, locals can't survive on canned food alone. She says as gardens begin to sprout, fresh food donations are always welcome.
