Woodstock city council has received an update on the status of the Bricks Pond Wetland Rehabilitation project.
WOODSTOCK - The Wetland Rehabilitation project was among the topics at the latest town council meeting.
Vice Chair Stewardship Oxford, Phillip Holst was at a council meeting on February 21st to give an update.
Holst says the project is in the first stage.
"We've been working on this restoration project for about two and a half years. So we're at a stage now where the first amount of excavation work can start to occur once the agreement with the city has been signed, and to start the phase one of the restoration portion of this project, to put wetlands back into areas that have actually been covered with phragmites as a toxic plant that has been infesting the marsh for some years and it's been spreading for quite a bit. So the phragmites is under control and will receive continual treatment and the wetlands themselves will become much more naturalized and should increase the amount of wildlife, better water quality and hopefully in the future some public access through parts of the marsh."
Holst says the Wetland rehabilitation project focuses on reestablishing natural vegetation on 88 acres of land. He says it has been in development for two and a half years.
Holst says the project is in the first stage and they will be looking at options to move into phase 2 later this year.
"Once this one is completed, which should be if the weather works with us, it should be completed by by sometime in May. That's generally the time when the area has been restored gets planted back into trees and shrubs, etc. And then we'll be looking to the city to explore the options for phase 2."
