A change to Woodstock's ARU program will allow for apartments above garages in the Friendly City.
WOODSTOCK - As the City of Woodstock continues to grow, the same goes for Additional Residential Units (ARU).
Woodstock City Council approved from changes to the ARU program during yesterday's meeting. Council made a direction to allow planning departments and committees of adjustments to go as high as six metres for accessory structures.
Mayor Jerry Acchione explains what this means for the ARUs.
“That’s to allow apartments above garages and we’ll be keeping parking restrictions in place, meaning not everyone will be eligible to have an apartment above a garage.”
It will also allow 60% of floor space in a primary structure. These are some improvements on how this will create affordable housing for Woodstock residents, future for youth, and grandparents.
With this approval, Acchione and councillors from yesterday's meeting hope that this does in fact help the housing crisis the city is facing.
“Anything helps. We need more housing, we need more affordable housing, and when you speak about affordable housing, that's normally apartments and trying to get accessible areas for people to live.”
Acchione also says there is a lack of affordable housing In the city, these are little improvements as this will go towards councils target in getting more affordable housing.
