Students from Oxford, Norfolk, St. Thomas-Elgin, and London-Middlesex will be taking part.
WOODSTOCK - Local students will go head to head today in the Oxford Invitational Youth Robotics Challenge.
Over 75 students plus their coaches will pack Goff Gym from 2:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.
They have all been tasked with building their own autonomous farm robot, similar to what you would see in some fields today. Each team has received a Lego Spike Prime Kit to get the job done and they also have to submit a report and a video outlining what they have learned throughout the process.
Brad Hammond is the Economic Development Officer for the City of Woodstock and he's also the co-chair of the competition. He says it's a great hands-on learning opportunity for aspiring young engineers.
"This event is such a great opportunity for students to gain insight into real-world applications of robotics. Working with industry mentors, the program allows students to use age and skill appropriate materials to explore solutions related to engineering, technology and skilled trade career paths - which of course make up a large portion of the local employment market."
The teams will start setting up their projects at 2:00 p.m. before the judging takes place from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.. The robots will be presented to the judging panel between 5:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
The City of Woodstock has been hosting this competition for 18 years now. The students are coming from across Oxford County, Norfolk County, St. Thomas-Elgin, and London-Middlesex to take part.
