Woodstock Sports Wall of Fame Class of 2025

Eight inductees will be added to the Woodstock Sports Wall of Fame this Sunday.

WOODSTOCK - Some new names will be added to the Woodstock Sports Wall of Fame.

Eight inductees will be honoured during a special ceremony at Goff Gym this Sunday. It starts at 1:30 p.m. and it will be open to members of the public.

Mark Schadenberg is a City Councillor and a member of the Recreation Advisory Committee. He says local slo-pitch star Kevin Bruder will be inducted under the Male Athlete category.

"He's one of those people who has really accumulated a amazing resume over more than 40 years of playing ball for the City of Woodstock. He's now about 60-years-old and he still competes."

Janet Thompson will be added under the Female Athlete category. She's a local triathlete who finished in second place in the 70 to 74 age group at the World Age Group Championships a few years ago. She's also a retired high school teacher and coach, where she had students competing at OFSAA in Nordic skiing, cross-country running and track.

Schadenberg says the Woodstock Curling Club's Silver Tankard Ontario Champions from 1963 will be added under the team category.

"They put together quite a run that winter including winning an Ontario championship in Welland. They actually had to come from behind and the final score was 22-20."

The eight person curling team included Bill Astle, Dave Mitchell, Peter Julian, Osmond Evans, Mark Gasparatto, Jim Schwandt, Jim Keith, and Dr. Gord Brown. Dr. Brown is the only living member.

Bill Arthurs will be honoured as a Builder of Sport. He has served as a longtime coach, executive member, and volunteer with the Woodstock Soccer Club. He won his 200th game in 1995, and it's believed that he had over 300 wins by the time he retired from coaching.

Two names will be added under the Historic category. Bob McMillian was a local baseball star, who got to try out for the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1950s. Bun Brewster is a legend with the Woodstock Badminton Club who won many trophies and medals during almost 40 year career. McMillan passed away in May of 2007 and Brewster passed away in May of 2005.

Jim Stevens will be honoured for his work with the Woodstock Skating Club with the Lifetime Achievement induction. He has served as a figure skating judge, executive, and event convener over the years. He's also a Past Chair of the Woodstock Skating Club and he was on the officials team for Skate Canada.

Kyla Rodrigue will be inducted under the Special Recognition category. She won the OFSAA gold medal in the 100 metre sprint for the intellectually impaired back in 2019. She also walked away with an OFSAA silver medal in 2018.
