Alida Kingswood broke the lightweight 2,000 metre rowing record for the 90-94 age group at the World Rowing Indoor Championship over the weekend.
WOODSTOCK/MISSISSAUGA - A Woodstock senior has broken another world rowing record.
Alida Kingswood is 91-years-old and she competed at the World Rowing Indoor Championship in Mississauga this past Saturday. She broke the lightweight 2,000 metre record for the 90-94 age group, finishing in 10 minutes 33.30 seconds.
Kingswood first started rowing five years ago when her son Matthew bought a rowing machine. He got her to try it out and noticed that she was just under the world record on her first try. That's when she decided to pursue the sport.
She has been rowing for a few years now and this is not her first world record.
"In 2021 and 2022 I won and that was the heavyweight (category) so I thought since I have done that twice, I should do something else. So I went into the lightweight (category) and I won that last Saturday."
She says she would love to enter shorter races in the future, but she will not compete if the race is scheduled for a Sunday.
Kingswood has been training at GoodLife Fitness ever since her family bought her a membership for her 90th birthday.
"It has been a delightful experience! Their PR is outstanding, the instructors are great and it has been a really worthwhile experience. I hope to keep going until I can't do it anymore."
Kingswood has been living in Woodstock for 10 years now, and she's happy to represent her hometown on the world stage.
"When we first moved to Woodstock, they called themselves the Friendly City and it's absolutely true! In the bank and the grocery stores, people are very polite and friendly."
