The Woodstock Police Service is launching a Special Victims Unit in order to tackle human trafficking, domestic violence and sexual violence.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Police Service is creating a Special Victims Unit that will feature two dedicated officers.
Chief Daryl Longworth says the SVU will focus on human trafficking, domestic violence and sexual violence.
"To really have a focus on the victims and how we can better deal with the victims, at the same time while pursuing that kind of violence in our community."
Woodstock Police have received Provincial funding to develop the SVU. Chief Longworth says people don't understand how prevalent human trafficking is in our region.
"I think a lot of people are shocked that human trafficking is happening in our backyard, it is happening right here in little old Woodstock but because of our proximity to the 401, that is a thoroughfare for organized crime and for the people that take advantage of these vulnerable people in our society, which is a form of slavery really."
Longworth says the SVU will operate under the Criminal Investigation Branch and will have a focus on victims.
