Help is on the way from Woodstock to Long Island. Four Woodstock Hydro workers arrived to help with power restoration late last night, according to Hydro Manager of Operations Jay Heaman. "They actually ended up having to spend the first night sleeping in their truck. So it kind of gives you an idea of the kind of dire straits that area is in." Heaman says as Hurricane Sandy arrived last week, the question went out to Hydro Workers if they'd be willing to help with power restoration if the call came. "We had an emergency response meeting here ourselves just for our own area the day of that storm...the question went out to our operation staff, if the call comes, is there anyone not willing to go, and not one hand went up. I think it's a testament to the willingness to respond." Heaman is hoping to keep in close contact with the workers, as the work is dangerous, and access to basics like food and gasoline is limited. "It's inherently a dangerous job, even at the best of times. They seem to be very well organized down in Long Island with the power authority. But again, it's a devastated area. The message we had for the crews is you work safely and you work within your means. We don't want to have any martyrs down there, we're there to help." Complicating matters is another storm system on the way to the US Eastcoast. It's a nor'easter and is expected to hit Wednesday, bringing 90-kilometre-per-hour wind gusts, heavy rain, and maybe more power outages. Heaman says the workers are expected to be down there 7-10 days, but they're not entirely sure, as it's a fluid situation. We're hoping to get some updates during the course of their work there.
