WOODSTOCK - Aquatic leadership courses can be very expensive for those who want to become swimming instructors or lifeguards. It currently costs $928.50 to take an 155 hour aquatic leadership course. Woodstock City Council passed a motion to waive the course fees for those who failed the course and wish to give it another shot. They would only have to pay the exam fees a second time.
Brian Connors, the Director of Parks and Recreation in Woodstock, says waiving the course fee will help push those who are unsuccessful to try again;
"This way we can help to keep more people that are in the aquatic leadership stream in it and end up being lifeguards and instructors".
There are currently 3 aquatic leadership courses being offered; Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross and National Lifeguard. Province wide, these courses have an 80-85% success rate. Although life guards and instructors are in short supply across Canada, Woodstock has not reported a shortage.
Connors says taking away the second time course fee is a preemptive measure;
"We thought let's start to put this in play because we don't want to end up having that because that will effect how often we can learn to swim or open the pools".
Aquatic leadership courses in Woodstock are offered at the YMCA.
