Two of the top three schools in the Ontario Schools Battery Recycling Challenge came from our region.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Christian School has placed third in the Ontario Schools Battery Recycling Challenge.
WCS collected 3,885 kilograms of batteries during the challenge. They received nearly $2,000 in prize money from the Raw Materials Company for placing third. Principal Bernese Hunink-Buiter tells Heart FM they started collecting batteries from the students and their families and then opened it up to the community.
"We put the work out there wherever we could and said bring in your batteries or can we come pick up your batteries at your house and people really got on board and they started bringing in the batteries and we had barrels that we could store them in."
Hunink-Buiter says the kids really got into the challenge and a lot of credit goes to the grade 5 class and their teacher who really wanted to win this competition. She says the event started with a presentation from Raw Materials Company.
"They came and they explained all of the stuff we need to know about batteries and why we were recycling and what parts and this really fit in with the grade 5 rocks and minerals unit that they were studying, so grade 5's took it on as a service learning project."
Springfield Public school near Tillsonburg actually finished the competition in first place.
