The 36 members of the Woodstock Choralaires are touring Italy
WOODSTOCK – Not many people can say they celebrated Canada Day by singing the national anthem at a restaurant in Italy, but that's exactly how the Woodstock Choralaires marked the occasion this year during a two-week concert tour.
Media Representative Pat Lapier said the choir will visit the Italian Lake District, Cinque Terra, Bologna and Florence. The group recently performed at Verdi's home, a retired enclave for opera singers and musicians in Milan and also caught a performance of Verdi's "Aida" at the 1st century A.D. Roman amphitheatre.
The Choralaires have four planned performances in total including the main square in Verona, Sunday mass in St Mark’s Basilica in Venice as well as the Pantheon in Rome.
Lapier said a group of the younger singers were hoping to hold a flash mob as well during their travels.
During the singing-troupes 48-year career, Lapier said they have toured eight times.
"What they like to do is tour and arrange to do some concerts and different venues and they decided to go to Italy because there's a lot of music history in Italy and it seemed an appropriate place to go."
In the past, the choir has visited and performed in England, Scotland, Wales, Holland, Denmark, Germany, Austria, France and Sweden.
The group left for their most recent tour June 28.
"There's 36 singers, a couple of them are retired Choralaires who wanted to go on the trip, so there are about 36 singers that went and there was a total of 54 people. Other family, friends or guests went with them."
