Local group says $200,000 could buy a pair of basketball courts at the proposed Woodall Farm Community Complex
WOODSTOCK - A local community group is looking to see basketball courts added to the proposed Woodall Farm Community Complex in Woodstock.
The group, known as Why Not Us made the ask to City Council Thursday.
Group member Kurke White says they would ideally like an outdoor court with a pavilion overtop.
"We would like to put some solar paneling on the roof. The flooring is a special flex matting that is easier on the joints and the players and it also doesn't hold water so you wont be falling and slipping just in case. We have benches and it's two courts and you can watch both games at the same time."
White estimates the basketball facility would cost around $200,000 but the group said they would be willing to fundraise to help pay for it.
Group member Todd Materick says they have been researching for the facility since January 2013.
"We came up initially with the plan to build it on James Street but then the Woodall Farm Complex came about so that opportunity sparked even more interest within ourselves and we have gotten within our community 500 signatures on a petition so far, just in the last couple months, supporting the project on a bigger scale to be a state of the art facility."
Group member Duane Thomas says basketball in Woodstock has boomed in the last couple of years.
"There's not a lot of places to actually play. There's courts, a lot of them don't even have mesh but the majority of them, I would say 95 percent of them are on school properties and that deters a lot of kids from playing. Basketball is big in Woodstock and it's only getting bigger and better."
The group have started an online petition for the basketball courts which can be found at whynotus.ca .
