Kids between 12-18 can sign up for the free program and learn about financial literacy, entrepreneurship, how to make a budget, how to save money and if they attend all 8 classes, they will get $200.
WOODSTOCK - Why Not Us Wednesdays is returning for a summer session.
The winter session was disrupted by the pandemic, however the team was able to adapt and they finished the course online. The summer session will also be done online. This is a free program.
Why Not Us Wednesday is designed to teach kids about financial literacy and encourage entrepreneurship. The sessions are designed for youth between the ages of 12 and 18 and they have lined up an excellent group of local entrepreneurs who will be speaking to the kids once again. Kids will learn how the ins and outs of how to run a business, how to start, the struggles, the hurdles, the good things about being an entrepreneur. The other part of the class will also feature financial literacy, how to make a budget, how to save money, invest for the future and preparing kids for the real world.
President of Why Not Us Todd Materick says they had 6 students graduate during the first winter group.
"I was so proud of them, we had probably about 14 kids when we started in the classroom setting and we had 6 who completed all of the classes and that was exciting. They were able to transition from the classroom to online and they continued to keep learning. I think it is more accessible for everyone too, especially in the summer time, you can be at the cottage and still login. Even though we shifted how we presented it, it didn't take away from the platform itself or the programming."
Materick says they do have incentives for the kids to attend all 8 classes.
"It is a free program and at the end of it the students will receive $200, a $100 from First Ontario Credit Union here in Woodstock and a $100 from WNU Strength and Conditioning from Nathan Picknell. The students must complete all 8 sessions to receive the funding."
The summer program starts on July 8th and they will run every Wednesday at 2:00 pm.
