The warning serves as a fatal reminder in Oxford County after a Tillsonburg man was killed last year while mowing his lawn.
When Thunder Roars! Head Indoors.
The OPP and Environment Canada are reminding people to head inside when you hear thunder as it is an indication that lightning could strike at any minute. We are currently in the midst of thunderstorm season in Southwestern Ontario. The warning serves as a fatal reminder in Oxford County as well. Last year 61 year old Dave Johnson died after getting hit by lightning while outside working at his home in Tillsonburg.
Every year in Canada, 6-10 people are killed and another 150-160 persons are injured as a result of lightning strikes according to Environment Canada. Police are encouraging people to have a safety plan in place regarding electrical storms as well to help reduce the risk and injury caused by lightning.
There is no safe place to be outside during a thunderstorm. Lightning can still hit you under a tree, a covered picnic shelter, tent, baseball dugout and really any non metal building.
If you are caught out in the open remember that lightening generally strikes higher ground and prominent objects. Therefore you are encouraged to take shelter in low-lying areas such as valleys or ditches but watch for flooding.
