Mosquitoes in Perth County have tested positive for West Nile Virus.
Perth County Health Officials have found a body of mosquitoes that tested positive for West Nile.
The health unit traps and test mosquitoes every week and have found a positive mosquito pool. Public Health Inspector Stephanie Carlisle tells Heart FM the positive test shows that West Nile is still prevalent in our region.
"West Nile virus is in Perth County, we know that now because of the positive mosquito pool, so our protected measures are still in place so we want people to cover up and clean up any stagnant water around your home and what I mean by cover up is to wear long sleeves or pants when mosquitoes are most prevalent at dusk and dawn."
She says most people who contract West Nile will not even know.
"So symptoms of West Nile virus are fever, headache, body ache, nausea, vomiting and a rash on the chest, stomach or back. Most of the people bitten by an infected mosquito will not show symptoms but those are the symptoms to look out for and it will be a mild illness."
West Nile can prove serious to people with weakened immune systems.
