The Woodstock Art Gallery Canada on Canvas exhibit kicks off today. Showcasing a Tom Thomson work on loan from the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
WOODSTOCK - Second time's the charm for the Woodstock Art Gallery. The Gallery celebrated their grand reopening on Friday revealing the result of extensive renovations. The second and third floors have been renovated into exhibition and studio spaces. Director of WAG Mary Reid also revealed a donor from the community had come forward and made a donation to the Woodstock Art Gallery's permanent collection.
Reid says the gallery contains around 1000 works of art that will be introduced on a rotating basis. One of the featured artists is Florence Carlyle-- a well-known Canadian painter.
On hand for the reopening were current and past Woodstock councillors including former Woodstock Mayor's Michael Harding and Pat Sobeski. Guests were treated to live music and had the opportunity to tour the permanent collection as well as the newest exhibit Canada on Canvas.
The exhibit opens today and runs until May 2, 2015 and features a rare Tom Thomson painting called Early Snow which is on loan from the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Reid's former colleague at the Winnipeg Art Gallery Amdrew Kear curated the exhibition that displays a century worth of Canadian painting from 1880 to 1980.
Exhibition tours will run today at 1:30 and 3 p.m. The Canada on Canvas exhibit takes a look at people, places and paint.
