It's that time of year again, a time where contagious viruses are on the move. Health Protection Supervisor Elaine Reddick says Oxford County is now getting hit with 3 different types of bugs - including one that is unknown. She says two long-term health care facilities in Tavistock (Bonnie-Brae & The Maples) are currently experiencing respiratory outbreaks, along with a gastro-intestinal outbreak at Leisureworld in Ingersoll. Reddick says the best and simplest method to help void off the bug is frequent hand washing or sanitizing your hands "People don't often realize how much the hands do play a role in the transmission of respiratory viruses and that's because people cough and sneeze and so the viruses and droplets that land on surfaces that people have coughed or sneezed on or near. If someone touches that surface and then touches their face, they can introduce the virus very easily in through their mouth or their nose or even through their eyes". Reddick says the public should be washing their hands with soap and water on a regular basis or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer at school or work or where large crowds of people congregate.
