NORFOLK COUNTY - Police are investigating a crash involving a motor vehicle and an animal.
OPP responded to the incident just after 6:30 last night, when a vehicle collided with a donkey on Highway 24 near Windham.
A 54 year old Quebec man was travelling on Highway 24 between Concession 3 of Townsend and Windham Road 2 when he came upon two horses and a donkey. The driver collided with the donkey but missed the horses.
Norfolk OPP Constable Ed Sanchuk warns animal owners to take necessary precautions for their animals.
"The OPP is urging all animal owners to ensure that they check their fencing along their properties to ensure that they are secure so that their animals don't escape. Police are also reminding drivers that it's not always possible to avoid a collision with an animal, particularly if it suddenly runs onto the road. But drivers can take sensible precautions to minimize the risk of a collision. Motorists are being urged to drive with caution and within the speed limit and to be aware of their surroundings at all times."
The driver was not injured, however the donkey sustained life threatening injuries and had to be put down by officers at the scene. The two horses have been taken to a nearby farmer until the owners are located.
