Oral health a priority for Van Dorp
SOUTHWEST OXFORD - It's a two horse race in South West Oxford when it comes to the position of Mayor.
Long time farmer George Van Dorp has filed nomination papers and says there are many challenges facing the municipality.
"Trying to do more things with less money is going to be an issue. I wrote perfect math exams when I was going to school so understanding numbers is going to be very important. We need to address oral health. It's funny how the Ministry of Health does not recognize the oral cavity as part of the body."
"In the country they quit spraying the ditches and they started mowing but mowing doesn't kill the weeds. The weeds still grow and they are spending a lot of diesel fuel not doing anything. We need to stop the production of weed seeds."
Van Dorp says he has many years of community involvement.
"I've worked for the County of Oxford on the Oxford Accessibility Advisory Committee and that led to the Oxford Poverty Action Coalition. Oral health and food security, policy watch -- we have been trying to develop things that will make life more equal for everybody."
Van Dorp says he was always inspired by the wisdom of former Woodstock Mayor Les Cook.
He also says he has donated blood nearly 500 times which he believes shows a passion to help others especially those he has never met.
Van Dorp is up against current Mayor David Mayberry.
