With schools closed over the holiday period, the UTRCA says parents and caregivers should keep children and pets away from nearby watercourses.
The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) is reminding the public to exercise extreme caution and stay away from rivers, streams, ponds and flood control reservoirs following the recent rain.
This comes following the Upper Thames River watershed receiving 25-35 mm of rain on Wednesday.
They say that the ground is saturated and much of the water is running off into waterways. Creeks are responding and currently flowing near bank-full, with peaks expected today.
They add that, with schools closed over the holiday period, parents and caregivers should keep children and pets away from watercourses.
The UTRCA say that the areas next to rivers and creeks are very slippery and, when combined with cold, fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard. They add that standing water can also present dangers.
Officials ask that residents should not attempt to drive through flooded roadways, saying that it is also not safe to take shelter along riverbanks or in low lying areas that are prone to flooding.
Based on the current weather outlook and streamflow forecasts, they say that major flooding is not anticipated.
The UTRCA’s flood control reservoirs at Fanshawe, Wildwood, and Pittock Conservation Areas are being operated to reduce downstream flooding.
UTRCA officials are monitoring the situation and will report on any changing conditions.
