Florida transportation officials say they won't immediately enforce a new law requiring foreign drivers to carry an international licence. Under the rules introduced New Year's Day, all drivers with foreign licences need an international permit issued by their country of residence in addition to a valid licence from home. But the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles says it has learned the new requirement might violate the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. The department says the law was passed so police are not faced with foreign licences in languages they can't understand. An International Driving Permit translates driver licence information into 10 languages and is valid for one year. Canadian Automobile Association spokesman Ian Jack says the state has subsequently told them they recognized it was a mistake to include Canada.
