Eager snowmobile enthusiasts still need some help from mother nature before they can hit the trails this year.
There's at least one group of people who are happy to see the white stuff on the ground, but Oxford County snowmobile enthusiasts need to be patient for a little bit longer.
District 5 Governor of the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs Gary Thuss says although they are working on the trails, they aren't ready yet. "We like to go out before the trails are open with the groomers just to get things packed in and set up the trails a little bit. Some of the snow freeze in place. There's not quite enough snow to get them open yet. Usually about a foot to a foot and half if it's the right kind of snow we can get it open with that."
Although it might seem like a late start to the snowmobile season, Thuss says we're not that far off from last year. "Most of the trails in our district last year weren't open until the first of February so we're actually not that far off. It's been a little warmer this year than the first part of last year, but yeah we're not that far off what we have been. Last year we had five and a half of winter - of good snow to snowmobile on."
Thuss also cautions people to stay off the trails until they open for their own safety. "The trails are all posted as closed yet. If you are on the trails you've got to remember your insurance will be void because the trails are closed and for safety reasons there is still some work going on on the trails so just stay off them and be safe. They're not really set to go yet."
Some trails are already open in other areas, and some have limited availability at this time. You can find out more about current trail status using the interactive map on the OFSC's website.
